Last day plein air painting took us to "The Knob" , located in Woods Hole, MA

with spectacular views of Quissett Harbor.

It replicated a European fishing village port with it's many anchored colorful boats and buoys.  It was a beautiful sunny crisp day.  You can see the painters setting up in the distant left.  I arrived early and took tons of reference photos in the morning light.  It's fun to explore the points of land that jut out into the sea so I took a quick bike ride/walk to the very tip of "The Knob" before returning to set up and choose a vantage point of the harbor.

While the fog in waters comes and goes equally fast, the lobster buoys are always brightly painted and clearly identifiable.

"While choosing the color of the buoy you must ensure the color or color patterns are unique to you and no other lobsterman is using them."

This charming doorway was part of the Museum on the Green in Falmouth, MA painted plein air.  I just loved the whale sign and light fixture by the door along with the colors created by the light on the cedar shingles and the warm greens in the distance.  This piece is a bit larger than I usual paint measuring 8" x 8"

Here is a photo another artist took of me painting so you can see the full view.  The tricky thing about painting plein air... when I started the painting the Museum was closed.  During the course of painting the Museum opened sliding the doors to cover the window I was painting.  One recommendation by our instructor was to take a photo of your view when you first start to paint just for this reason... I'm glad I did so I could finish by using my reference photo :-)

this is how it looks on the included easel:

Day 2 in Cape Cod our group of plein air painters scattered around the grounds of the Museum in Falmouth painting the architecture and gardens.  The inspiration for this painting came for the lamp post you see here.  Throughout the seaport village you see these wonderful lamps and accents to the architecture.  I chose to focus on the the top of the lamp for this painting, but the whole photo could be a painting with the charming cedar shingle home in the background. Plein air adds a whole new dimension to the painting experience. You are out of the studio's controlled environment and suddenly surrounded with the sensory stimulation of the environment and it's weather, ever changing light, breezes and sometimes pesky bugs!  It was a beautiful day but very warm so the shade was a welcomed change to my morning painting which I will post tomorrow.

Arriving in Falmouth.MA with a half day to mull around before the start of the workshop I felt compelled to drive all the way to Provincetown... who knows when I'll be back and that little stretch of land curling into the sea was just too irresistible!
Bike on the bike rack and navigator on I started off.  30 minutes into the drive a sidetrack stop at Isaiah Thomas Books, a charming pink house with the sign reading "old and rare books"  I always head for the art section and didn't I find a wonderful biography of Philadelphia artist, John Sloan ~ perfect! The 1-1/2 hour drive was pretty solitary through dunes and marsh.  Then the contrast is striking... suddenly you arrive to a bustling seaport village full of activity.  People walking shopping gallery hopping, outdoor cafès, cedar shingle architecture everywhere, sounds of fog horns, seagulls,  street musicians playing.  I parked and took off on my bike to enjoy the atmosphere all the while
thinking "pinch me am I really here!"
then the rain.... oh well... time to pause and eat.  Seeing 'lobster roll' sandwich signs everywhere I asked a local where to get the best.  He suggested here:
and he was right!  it was unbelievable!
so I waited out the rain ...
a bit damp and chilled I was glad to have thrown a bottle of merlot in the car last minute so  headed back to the Inn to enjoy a glass of wine and my new found John Sloan book and three days of oil painting ahead of me.  Life is Good ~

"Tranquility" by Susie Morrell

I met the most wonderful artists at a recent workshop in Cape Cod instructed by Leslie Saeta and Margaret Sheldon hosted by Linda Collins at the Museums on the Green in Falmouth, MA
There is nothing I needed more at this moment in time than an inspiring courageous group of women who traveled from all over the country for the same purpose filled with the same passion... capturing the essence of the Cape and communicating it through oil paint.  In our breaks from the easel, we gathered at the quaint pubs for wine and the best lobster rolls on brioche buns you can imagine.  The best part is hearing the stories of each artist and the journey that brought us all together!  I'll post more of the trip and paintings in the days to come.
I took a TON of reference photos.

SOLD
private collection

I was going through my paints and wanted to paint these chive blossoms (photo courtesy of Joey Randall's Village Voice blog) I use a very limited palette but was having difficulty achieve the hue of the blossoms so turned to my kit and found a wonderful tube of Gamblin's Manganese Violet. Perfect!  Thanks to Dot Bunn for encouraging me to purchase it! This one is now in a private collection.  I loved painting it so may paint another version!
