Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

It's been a privilege sharing my work with you over the past year!
Wishing you all the gifts of the Christmas Season… Peace, Love, Health, Happiness

Adonidia is a monotypic genus of  flowering plants in the Arecaceae family. It consists of one species, the Manila Palm. It is commonly known as the "Christmas Palm" because its fruits become bright scarlet and tend to be that color in winter.

Help Build a Home!

November is my month of giving thanks.  The recent auction and signature fundraising event I participated in for technology in the school at Notre Dame High School was incredibly fun and and I was in awe of the generosity of bidders! It was my first year donating a painting as I mentioned in my previous post. I will definitely do it again next year! Many heartfelt thanks to the O'Donnell family for the purchase of the painting and the contribution it will make to the schools technology fund!  I am thrilled to know it will be enjoyed in your home.

My next contribution will be to Habitat for Humanity Bucks County for their signature fundraising event on November 15th at the Manor House at Commonwealth in Horsham, PA starting at 6:30pm called Hard Hats and High Heels click HERE for information if you would like to attend. See photos of the beautiful event venue by clicking HERE.  Below is my donation which I had so much fun painting!  It will be part of the silent auction.  I will be attending so hope to see you there :-)

Notre Dame High School Signature Auction Event

"Notre Dame High School" ©2013 Susie Morrell 10" x 20" oil on gallery wrap canvas

In addition to my September daily challenge, I have been working on two auction paintings.  The first event is on Saturday November 2, 2013 at Notre Dame High School called "Puttin' on the Ritz".   If you are attending the auction, look for my painting of the high school that will be part of the silent auction.  If you are not attending the auction, but are interested in bidding on the painting, contact me at 267-980-2777.  You can view all items and bid using BidPal by clicking HERE.

The view for the painting was taken from under the arch of the entrance to the football field during a sunny weekend afternoon when I was in the area of the school and the sun was setting.  The glow of the light on the facade of the school accented by the fall colors in bloom were my inspiration.  Since our introduction to Notre Dame six years ago we have witnessed the growth not only in our children but in the school as a whole.  Notre Dame combines education for the mind, body and soul.  I am happy to donate this painting and it's proceeds as a small token of my appreciation for the school, it's educators and administrative staff who make the school a great place to be a teenager.

As promised, here are all 30!

I love this quote by Jack Penn ~
"One of the secrets of life is to make stepping stones out of stumbling blocks."
I call my studio - Skipping Stones Studio, so this quote seems appropriate having reached my goal of 30 daily paintings in 30 days.

Thank you for viewing my work!

30 in 30 Day 30: "Black Eyed Susan" by Susie Morrell Painting a Day

Well, the journey has ended... or has it begun? Here I am at day 30.  I painted this Black Eyed Susan because it's a tie between this or the sunflower that is my favorite.  I used to pick these by the handful and bring back for my mom from the fields around our house on the hill.  As a little girl I thought my mom just named them Black Eyed Susan because my name was Susie and I had dark brown eyes.. it was quite some time later before I realized everyone called them that....

30 in 30 Day 28: "Love Letters" by Susie Morrell a Painting a Day

What started as correspondence across the miles between two young adults matured into love and then the sacrament of marriage taking place TODAY September 28, 2013.  To memorialize the journey of love and honor the day, my sister and her husband commissioned me to paint the letters and engagement ring of their niece as a keepsake and gift.  How appropriate to paint it on this day, their wedding day.  It makes my heart full to think of what must be happing on this wedding morning for the two of them as they begin their life together.  I wish them joy, health and happiness.  It was an honor to paint this for them.

30 in 30 Day 26: "Pumpkins" by Susie Morrell - Painting a Day

Up to this point, I have used a very limited palette of colors.  But for these pumpkins, I broke out a tube of Coral Orange by Old Holland.  Just loved the range of chromatic value I could achieve.  Pumpkins are popping up everywhere!

30 in 30 Day 25: "Fishing Lure" by Susie Morrell Daily Painting

One thing you may not know about me is I like to fish and love 'all things fishing'.  I have fond memories of fishing with my uncle when I was a little girl.  He would take my brothers and I out on the lake after dinner to give my mom a chance to have some quite time after my father passed away.  We spent many evenings listening to the water lap at the boat and play guessing games as to who would catch the next fish.  I have a collection of old wooden lures and for some reason thought to look at them today.. this on caught my eye... I wonder how many fish were caught by IT?

30 in 30 Day 23: "Togo" by Susie Morrell

This painting will go to a private collection.  The image was provided and is to honor "Togo" a Siberian Husky and his story of incredible odds during the 1925 Iditarod Race for Mercy when in January of 1925 a diphtheria epidemic raged through Nome, Alaska and the only serum that could stop the outbreak was in Anchorage one thousand miles away.  You may have heard of Balto, who ran the last leg of the race.  But click HERE to read the untold story of Togo.  I'm proud of my sister, Anne Woodbury, who is a Partner and Managing Director of Togo Run, a health communications agency that has taken on Togo's name as well as Togo's determination in health care solutions. 30 in 30 Day 15 "Lion Pride" by Susie Morrell

Visiting Penn State last weekend I wanted to capture different views of the Nittany Lion Shrine - the most photographed site on the Penn State University Park Campus. Designed and created by sculptor Heinz Warheke, it's always tradition to have your photo taken with the Lion on a football weekends.  I had to rise early to take photos freely before the line started to form and the light was right!  After reviewing my photographs, I liked this profile view.  Did you know the lion is now guarded by 'Lion Ambassadors' for every home game ever since the right ear was damaged in 1978 again in 1994 and a third time in 2003?

30 in 30 Day 13 "Roll Tide" by Susie Morrell

I loved this photo sent by my sister of a quiet beach where she vacationed with her family
in Mobile, AL  Keeping the harmony of the hues was a challenge.  My mind told me the umbrella was bright vibrant color.. but with what looks like a rain shower moving in, the color value is not as high chromatically.  That's an Alabama National Championship hat on the beach towel for my brother-in-laws who are enthusiastic Crimson Tide fans!

30 in 30 Day 12 "Sunflower Field" by Susie Morrell

This is a cropped view of the photo I shared back in August of a wonderful sunflower field on Werth Road driving to Alpena, MI  It may turn into a larger more rectangular painting to get the full effect of the massive field of sunflowers.  But for now I am sticking to the 6 x 6 square format.  It took my breath away rounding the bend and seeing a sea of yellow.  (my favorite color by the way!)

30 in 30 Day 11 "Bee on a Daisy" by Susie Morrell

I had a request for a bee.. this was so fun to paint!  tricky to get the transparency of the bee's wings.  I am enjoying using the palette knife to mold the paint which forces me to stay loose and not get too detailed.

30 in 30 Day Ten - "Garden of Reflection" by Susie Morrell

Today's painting is in remembrance of  9-11.
Right here in Yardley, PA off of Woodside Road is the Pennsylvania
Memorial "The Garden of Reflection" to honor those lost on that tragic day.

"….. The Memorial designed by Yardley architect Liuba Lashchyk AIA invites us on a walking Memorial Journey symbolizing “After Darkness…Light”. This Memorial Journey leads from sorrowful reminders of tragedy and grief towards luminous symbols of Hope, Peace and Celebration of Life."

30 in 30 Challenge Day 9 "Library on Lake Afton" by Susie Morrell

I realize for those of you who subscribed to my blog... I promised not to inundate your personal email inbox with too many updates from my studio.  Well, in all my enthusiasm for the 30 in 30 Challenge, I just kept posting each day forgetting you were receiving a post EVERY day as well.  Please hang in there... and my posts will be scaled back to just a few times a month after the Challenge is complete on September 30th.  My subject matter for this painting is a little closer to home today. Most of you know this historic library sits just on the edge of Lake Afton in the heart of Yardley, PA creating a quiet, peaceful place to sit and enjoy watching the ducks, geese and seasons change. My reference image was taken in springtime so you can see the dogwood and azaleas in bloom.

Will Run For Color!

Color Run 2013!
I ran this 5K for two reasons:

One:  because I am highly motivated by color when I paint and what better way to start my 30 day paint challenge then with the Color Run!
Two: because many illnesses are associated with a color so I ran in honor of the amazing people who have influenced my life and courageously fought for their health.  Some battles won, some lost.. but all left an impact that will never be forgotten.

PS.. on our drive home through Hightstown, NJ we stumbled on the most wonderful breakfast café called Roasting Post Coffee at 124 N Main Street, Hightstown.  I had the best.. and I mean THE BEST latte  served in a wonderful large fiesta ware mugs.  Was it the run? The need for coffee? or the great conversation with girlfriends?  But, this along with the kalamata olive/feta omelette was pure pleasure.

30 in 30 Challenge starts Sunday September 1st!

Thank you for joining me here on my 30 in 30 challenge journey.  September always seems to be a natural time to make 'New Years' resolutions with my children off to school and more time to spend in the studio.  A personal goal of mine is to find more harmony in my daily studio routine.   I am sure some of you can relate to the fear of the blank canvas.  I want to overcome my fear and have some fun doing it.  Not every painting will be a winner.  Some may be just studies for future paintings.  I hope I inspire you to do the same.... whatever you do, just create... make the mark... meditate on the beauty of it!

A Series of Fortunate Events...

I love to drive on long road trips.. call me crazy.. but I do.  Maybe it's because you never know what surprises lie ahead. Or maybe it's being disconnected from all interruptions, decisions and choices. A recent trip took me through Kentucky on my way to Florida.  As I am driving through Kentucky I remembered a favorite artist I follow, Dreama Tolle Perry, who lives in Paris, KY. ( I always loved the way she hesitated after saying Paris on her blog radio show so for just an instant you thought France was rolling off her tongue next but beautiful Kentucky is home to Dreama)  So I looked up Paris, KY on my iPhone and found myself just 30 miles from Dreama!  hum... the nudges that come in the silence of driving.   So I sent Dreama a quick shout out on Facebook that I was waving hello from 75 South.
Then humming along south off exit 77 I stopped at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea where I found this magical ring created by Rob Weingartner made from sterling silver with a Petoskey stone.  I'll talk about Petoskey stones in another post.. but I absolutely love them! They are naive to northern Michigan a place I hold dear to my heart.  If you find yourself near exit 77 you MUST stop at the Artisan Center!  It houses over 650 exhibits of Kentucky's finest artisans. There is a great café to complete the experience.
Petoskey stone ring hand crafted by Rob Weingartner
Silversmith, Artist & Jewelry Designer

If you have the time... take a drive through the artisan town of Berea, KY.  Here is a great map.  My head was twirling side to side as I drove past streets filled with weavers, instrument makers, furniture artisans, jewelry designers, glass workers, potters, painters, sculptors and musicians.
