Tamarack Island, Hubbard Lake, 5 x 7 inches
oil on archival panel

Although it is called an island, it is really a peninsula located on the
south shore of Hubbard Lake.  It can be seen from many vantage
points and is a favorite spot for many fishermen.

The lake is slowly waking up with these warmer days and daylight savings!
Soon the romantic call of the loons will return as they build their nests.

Fun fact #1: we have a "loon ranger" here at the lake who we report to when we spot a nest!
Preserving the loon count on the lake so important to maintaining the balance of nature.

Fun fact #2: loons are like airplanes in that they need a runway for takeoff. In the case of loons, they need from 30 yards up to a quarter mile (depending on the wind) for flapping their wings and running across the top of the water in order to gain enough speed for lift-off.

Fun fact #3: the oldest recorded Common Loon was a female, and at least 29 years old, when she was spotted in Michigan in 2016 and identified by her band. She had been banded in the same state in 1989.

PS. If you want a great book to read: The Loonfeather by Iola Fuller is wonderful.
It is a story of an Indian girl, destined to grow up with the incompatible traditions of her own people and of the white traders on Mackinac Island.

A recent original oil painting commission of a lovely historical cottage on Hubbard Lake, Michigan called the "Honeymoon Cottage".  This authentic log cabin sits on the east shore down by the waters edge where the rhythmic lapping of water can be heard while watching the sun set each evening.
So romantic!
The couple who currently own the property where this cottage sits commissioned this
painting for their main residence.
